Shaw and Simpson Removals (later to become Specialised Movers) was founded in the 1980s by Paul Simpson and Nigel Shaw.
The business started with one Bedford TK furniture truck, bought to undertake a single house removal from Sheffield to Bristol. The customer wanted us personally to move him and the price wouldn’t be an issue, so we bought the van for £300 and repaired the engine ourselves. We knew that we needed to find more work though, so with hard searching and door knocking we found two upholstery companies that asked us to deliver their finished products throughout the UK. A year later we needed another vehicle, and so purchased another 7.5t Bedford TK.
Expansion was then inevitable, and more trucks and staff followed. As we grew, Pickfords Removals realised that we could assist them in their ongoing growth, so we supplied them with professional trained staff to assist in loading and unloading vehicles throughout the country.
Shaw and Simpson Removals predominantly working for Pickfords prompted the company’s name change to Specialised Movers, and the name became synonymous with the removals industry. In the late 90s Specialised Movers Joined the BAR (British Association of Removals) and six months later became members of the CMG (British Association of Removals Commercial Moving Group).
In early 2000 we moved into our current premises in Sheffield. Housing 900 storage containers and a full-time staff compliment of over 50 employees, we quickly moved to the top in the UK commercial moving industry and were winners of the Commercial Mover of The Year (CMoTY) award in both 2012 and 2021, and in other years we were awarded a Certificate of Excellence.
In the years following, the business evolved into a prominent player in the international field offering monthly direct road services to Spain and Portugal. It was a common sight to see a Specialised Movers vehicle in Europe. Our road train service carried 3500 cft on groupage work, delivering throughout France, Germany, Belgium, then into Spain and returning through Portugal. With this service came the desire for credibility and in 2014 we were accepted into the Euromovers World Wide Network. This boosted our network, not only through Europe, but throughout the world. When someone is moving overseas, we can arrange a Euromovers fellow member to handle the consignment with the same skill that we adopt here at Specialised Movers.
Throughout our development we have grown our fleet of trucks and acquired other removal companies such as Housleys Removals, Ball and Waite Removals, Taylors Removals and O Connors. All of these have built an enviable reputation and work well within the Specialised Movers Group of Companies. Now the company operates 18 full size air ride pantechnicons, six smaller lo loaders and a lorry mounted crane vehicle. We employ 50 full time trained operatives working from four sites in and around Sheffield, Rotherham, Dronfield, Chesterfield, Worksop, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Barnsley. Specialised Movers Group will continue to grow and look forward to a prosperous future.
